SOME FAMOUS OLDEST TOURIST SPOTS IN KOLKATA

VICTORIA MEMORIAL :

Victoria Memorial is the large marble building which was built between 1906-1921 for the memory of Queen Victoria to celebrate her 25 years of rule over India. Actually it is almost a replica of the Victoria Memorial in London. It was conceptualised by George Curzon, viceroy of India. Architecture style is Indo-Saracenic revivalist. It is a landmark in the history of Indian architecture.

HOWRAH BRIDGE :

Howrah Bridge was built over Hooghly river. Construction time was 1936-1942 and was opened in 1943. Official name is Rabindra Setu. We take the facility of ferry ride as it runs Kolkata & Howrah, from the launch ghat. It carries daily traffic of over 100,000 vehicles.

MARBLE PALACE :

The beautiful 19th century Marble Palace was built by a rich Bengali merchant, Raja Rajendra Mullick in 1835. That was built with a mix of neoclassical style with traditional Bengali elements & additional touches of Chinese style.

PRINCEP GHAT :

Princep ghat is one of the oldest spots in Kolkata. It was built in 1841 during the British Raj along the river bank of Hooghly. There is a railway station which is part of the Kolkata Circular Railway. This railway is mentioned by Eastern Railway. The station code is PPGT. There is a jetty nearby called the MAN-O-WAR jetty which is mainly used by Indian Navy. We found there a beautiful view of Vidyasagar setu which is also known as Second Hooghly bridge.

INDIAN MUSEUM :

Indian museum is the largest & oldest museum in India. It was founded in 1814. There are rare collections of antiques, armour & ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies & Mughlai paintings. Here we gain our knowledge about the culture and tradition of our country.

ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL :

St. Paul’s Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral that operates under the Church of North India. The building construction was started in 1839 and was completed in 1847. It is the largest church in Kolkata & the first Anglican cathedral in Asia. Primarily it was built to accommodate the increasing Christian community in Kolkata.

Kolkata must have at least a few fuchka stalls in every neighbourhood. Mainly in the evening time people gather in the stall. Basically we find fuchka with filled up potato pur and tawk jol. But taste depends on fuchkawala. Some places we find mouth watering tastes. So we all have one or two favorite places for fuchka where we get the best fuchka.

In Kolkata we also find different types of fuchka. Dahi fuchka is one of the best items and many people like this type of fuchka. It made up with dahi. We find many fuchka stalls.

Now we get some shops for fuchka. There we find some attractive fuchka like chocolate fuchka, cheese fuchka, noodles fuchka, corn fuchka, ice cream fuchka etc. Actually it depends on the ingredients.

On the other hand we find plain fuchka with a different taste of tawk jol. It depends on the ingredients of water.

Now fuchka is a great item on any occasion. At home we are also able to make fuchka. But in street stalls of fuchka is our love.

PARAMOUNT SHERBATS & SYRUPS

Paramount is a heritage place in Kolkata for sarbat. It was established in 1918. It's situated in College street. This place is very big but it has proper sitting arrangement. Open time is 12 pm but within 5 mins this place is full with customers. All ages of people love this place for sarbat. College street is the best place for book lovers, students, teachers and there also have schools, colleges and university. So all types of people are visiting Paramount.

One of the best and most popular items in this shop is Dab sarbat. Cost of this sarbat is only 70/-. In summer time when we get very thirsty dab sarbat is best for some refreshment.

A special item in this shop is Passion fruits which are made with rabri, cashew, almond etc. It is the most costly item in this shop. Cost is 150/-.

Other malai sarbats are Cocoa malai, Kesar malai, Mango mania, Rose malai, Banana malai, Strawberry malai, Valina malai, Pineapple malai. Cost of those is between 100-120.

Some curd based items are there like Cream rose, Cream pineapple, Cream orange, Cream Kesar lassi etc. Price of all these items are 50/-.

Others you get some water based syrup cold coffee.

Sharbat bottles are also available there with rupees 200 per bottle. They are able for home delivery service.

Many famous people visit this place. There we find a bangaliwana. Again and again I visit this place for those tasty sarbats.

In North Kolkata a most popular old restaurant is MALANCHA. It's situated in Hatibagan. There are 2 branches one is ADI MALANCHA and another is NABA MALANCHA. In ADI MALANCHA there don't have any sitting arrangements, it's situated on the road and in NABA MALANCHA there are proper sitting arrangements. Decoration of this restaurant is very simple and looks like an old restaurant in North Kolkata.

CHICKEN KABIRAJI is the most popular and famous item in this restaurant. They serve it with salad and kasundi. This is really a mouth watering item with a reasonable price. Size is also good.

There you also find other items like cutlet, fry, moglai, fried rice, chilli chicken, mutton kosha etc.

In Kolkata sweets are necessary for all events. In Kolkata I found a place for varieties of kulfi with a pocket friendly budget. The name of this shop is Royal Faluda. It's situated near Quest mall. It is a small shop on the road but varieties of special items are there. But there one of my favorite items is rabri kulfi. Cost of this item is 80/-. I love rabri very much and in this item they prepare kulfi with rabri for making it more tasty. So please try it at least once.

CRISPY CHILLI BABYCORN

Nowadays Crispy Chilli Baby corn is a popular Indo Chinese veg side dish. Mainly it's made with corn 🌽. So this is the best item of all corn lovers. This dish is really delicious.

A TRADITIONAL TRANSPORT IN KOLKATA : HAND PULLED RICKSHAW

Hand pulled rickshaw is a traditional mode of transportation in Kolkata. It's actually a two wheelers cart for seating two people. Basically we see that type of transport in a few places in North Kolkata : Shyambazar, Sovabazar, Bagbazar, Manicktala etc.

Socio economic condition of rickshawala :

• Mainly the migrated people from Bihar, Jharkhand choose this profession in Kolkata for better income. In Kolkata they live in some particular area where their community lives in rent. Otherwise they live in any slum area.
• They work very hard for carrying passengers or luggages but their income is very low.

Advantage :

• Rickshaw is an important transport for moving nearby places.
• Something we don't get other transport for some route that time rickshaw is a helpful transport.

Disadvantage :

• Hand pulled rickshaws are not more comfortable transport than others.
• Cost depends on distance but it varies. Cost is a little bit more than others.

Present day context :
